The retail-sales SoundScan™ form plays a vital role in how the music industry works. Billboard Magazine, CMJ, MTV, VH1 and other
companies generate charts and make important decisions based on the data collected by SoundScan. The "Title Addition Sheet" is used
to register bar code release numbers in order to track your album sales nationwide. This is the method used by many artists and groups,
now famous, to attract the attention of industry leaders such as A&R representatives, booking agents, promoters, artist managers and
label executives. High performance on SoundScan can get your phone ringing with all kinds of new opportunities as well as legitimize
your claims to fame. It is an important part of a professional musician's marketing strategy.
Fax your completed “Title Addition Sheet” to SoundScan at 914-328-0234. The
following directions will help you complete the form. Use a separate copy of
the form for each album title. If you have any further questions, contact
SoundScan directly at 914-328-9100.
A. Release Information:
Title: Enter the name of your release.
Release Date: Enter the date your album was or will be ready for retail distribution.
Artist: Enter the name of the artist or group.
B. Label Information:
Parent Label:
Enter the name of the record label which issued your barcode.
Distribution Co:
Enter your distributor (i.e., CEMA, BMG, SONY, WEA, UNI, PGD, etc.) Enter
“N/A” if you don’t have a distributor).
Sub Label: If
the Sub Label is different from the Parent Label, enter it here.
Label
Abbreviations: Choose an abbreviation for your record label (or sub label).
If it is already taken, SoundScan will contact you.
C. Barcode Information:
UPC: Enter your
complete barcode number as seen in the example on the form. The second to
last digit in your barcode should also designate the configuration. To learn
more about barcodes, please visit our Web page entitled “Bar Codes and the
UCC”.
Price: Enter the
suggested retail price for this item.
Configuration
Types: Enter the letter which corresponds with the legend to the right. Use
a separate line for each configuration of this release (i.e. CD, cassette,
maxi, etc.).
D. Genre of Music: Select the style that best suits your
music. You must choose one since this is the classification which will be used
by Billboard to place you on the charts.
E. Finally, enter your contact information.
